Are You Remodeling An Older Home?

Have you bought an older home with the idea of renovating it? Perhaps the house you have lived in for a long time needs a face lift. Whatever the reason that you are remodeling an older home, from arranging for cabinet repair to buying an antique bathtub that needs refinishing, here are some ideas that might help you.

Make An Evaluation - As you go through your entire house, write down every single thing that needs to be repaired or replaced. Pay attention to detail. Do things need to be repaired or do they need to be replaced? For example, as you go into the different bathrooms and as you study the condition of the things in the kitchen, you might realize that the cabinets are basically in good shape, but they just need a bit of attention. Perhaps your kitchen cabinets need to be repainted and need to have the hardware replaced. If you're handy with tools, that job will probably be an easy one to accomplish. In the bathrooms you might realize that the cabinets need to be totally replaced, maybe because of water use over a long period of time. Again, if you are comfortable with do-it-yourself work, you can probably install brand new bathroom cabinets yourself.

Make It Unique - As you repair or replace items in your older home, think about how the house might have looked as it was when it was first built. For example, owners along the way might have decided that they wanted to have a contemporary look in their master bedroom. If so, they probably disposed of things like claw-foot bathtubs. If you are wanting to recapture that look from yesteryear, consider looking for an antique bathtub. Don't worry if it's stained. Experts can make that antique bathtub look like new, even polishing up the brass or pewter hardware. If the hardware is in super bad condition, consider buying new hardware that mimics the old-fashioned look you want. Choose other decorative items that will give your house a unique look. For example, if you have to replace the window in your front door, think about buying a stained-glass window.

Since you have remodeled the kitchen and the bathrooms, think of buying decorative pieces that will complement the work that has been done. Look through magazines and books for ideas that might inspire you. Think of going to old homes that have been turned into museums. You'll more than likely get lots of ideas from those old homes.
